What can I do as a volunteer?
Staff Aide: Assist museum departments
in various ways, such as mass mailing projects, making phone calls
and answering phones, filing, making copies, faxing documents, typing
letters and other light office and clerical duties. Staff Aides
can be placed in the following departments: Curatorial, Education,
Development, Marketing & Public Relations and Facility Rental.
Entrance/Gallery Greeters: Welcome
and assist visitors by providing directions, distributing information
about current events/exhibitions, open gallery doors, answer general
questions, inform visitors of prohibitions (no food or beverages
in galleries and no photography except on the lower level), and
maintain a presence in the museum.
Gallery Monitors: Provide direction
to visitors, enforce rules regarding food/beverages and photography,
monitor behavior of visitors ensuring that exhibitions are not being
touched or damaged, and report any problems within galleries.
Museum Educator: Conduct tours
for groups of all ages throughout the year. Museum educators also
facilitate workshops for groups (e.g. jewelry making, flag making,
etc.). Volunteers have to complete the required training process
to conduct tours.
Special Events: Assisting with
planned and annual museum events such as African World Festival,
Juneteenth, Kwanzaa and others.
Membership: Promote and sell
museum memberships at various events at the museum or at community
sponsored events.

- Complete an application.
- Complete an interview questionnaire.
- Complete skills inventory.
- Complete building tour.
- Make a commitment to volunteer 4 hours per
week or per month.
