And Still We Rise: Our Journey through African American History and Culture
This long-term exhibition serves as the central experience of our museum. The journey begins in prehistoric Africa, the cradle of human life. Students then witness several ancient and early modern civilizations that evolved on the continent. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean, they experience the tragedy of the Middle Passage and encounter those who resisted the horrors of bondage, emancipated themselves and sometimes took flight by way of the Underground Railroad. Throughout this trip, the efforts of everyday men and women who built families, businesses, educational institutions, spiritual traditions, civic organizations and a legacy of freedom and justice in past and present-day Detroit are hailed. What an awesome journey!
Self-Guided Museum Learning Experience
Guests will experience the permanent exhibition And Still We Rise: Our Journey through African American History and Culture. Each person will be able to explore the 22-gallery exhibition on his and her own.
Living History Museum Learning Experience
Guests will journey the permanent exhibition And Still We Rise: Our Journey through African American History and Culture with different people of the time periods they are traveling through. They will begin with an archeologist who will guide them through ancient Africa. Then a market vendor from the kingdom of Benin will greet them. Once the guests arrived in the United States they will be guided by a self-emancipated person who will take them through the Underground Railroad. As each person moves forward in time they will also meet a factory worker at Fords factory and experience Paradise Valley of the 1940’s. In the end they will meet a civil rights activist on his way to a protest in the 1960’s. This is truly an adventure!
Individual Educator Museum Learning Experience
Guests will travel through the 22-gallery permanent exhibition And Still We Rise: Our Journey through African American History and Culture with a trained Museum Educator. The Educator will impart important information from each gallery and answer any questions.
*The experience that groups will automatically receive Tuesday through Friday from 9am until 2pm will be the Living History Museum Learning Experience.
